Stronger Than Cancer: How Awareness is Your Strength

This June, we champion the health of every father, grandfather, and father figure who’s stood as a pillar of strength in our lives. In honor of Prostate Cancer Awareness Month, Makati Life Medical Center encourages all dads to use the power of knowledge as their greatest strength against prostate cancer through early detection.

Why Early Detection Matters

Prostate cancer is the most common cancer among men, especially those over 50. It often progresses silently, which makes early detection essential. The earlier it’s found, the more effective treatment can be, giving dads the chance to enjoy more years, more milestones, and more memories.

Common Signs and Symptoms

Prostate cancer may not always show symptoms early on, which is why regular check-ups are key. However, if symptoms do appear, they may include:

  • Difficulty urinating or a weak urine stream
  • Frequent urination, especially at night
  • Blood in urine or semen
  • Erectile dysfunction
  • Discomfort in the pelvic area or lower back

While these symptoms could also indicate other health concerns, it’s important to get checked to rule out prostate cancer.

When Should You Get Screened?

Men aged 50 and above should begin regular prostate cancer screenings. For those with higher risk, including those with a family history of prostate cancer, screening may start as early as age 40 to 45. Screening typically includes PSA (Prostate-Specific Antigen) blood test.

Talk to us about the right time for you or your loved ones to start screening.

This Father’s Day let’s give the gift of good health and prevention. Encourage the superDads in your life to schedule their check-up and take charge of their health. Early detection isn’t just a medical choice; it’s an act of love.
